About the film

Platon Ryabinin, a pianist, gets off his train at a small station to eat, and it leaves without him. He argues with the waitress, Vera, about a bill he refuses to pay, and they become enemies at once.

Stuck without money or a ticket, he spends the next day in her company. We slowly learn why he is travelling: he has taken the blame for a car accident caused by his wife. The quarrel turns into one of the most moving love stories in Soviet cinema.

Ryazanov mixes sharp comedy with sadness, as he does so well. Gurchenko and Basilashvili are perfect together.
