About the film
The Germans trapped at Stalingrad are waiting for a relief attack from the south. Standing in its way, on a frozen river bank, is an artillery battery of very young officers and tired soldiers.
The film follows the battery through a single day of fighting, from the arrival of the tanks to the long night after, and its battle scenes in the snow are among the most realistic in Soviet cinema.
Yuri Bondarev, who wrote the novel, fought at Stalingrad as a young artillery officer himself.
