About the film
Fyodor Lavretsky has spent years drifting around Europe after his wife was unfaithful to him. Tired and disappointed, he comes back to his estate in the Russian countryside in the 1840s.
Visiting his neighbours, he meets Liza, a quiet, deeply religious girl unlike anyone he has known. Then news arrives that seems to set him free, and happiness looks possible for the first time.
Konchalovsky's elegant Turgenev adaptation is a feast of costumes, old houses and summer light, with a strong international cast.
